The existing Saudi Railways network connects the port city of Dammam to the capital city Riyadh.
There are two lines in operation:

1) 556 km single track line built in the 1950s and used only for freight
2) 449 km single track line built in the 1980s and used by passenger trains

The railway handles about 850,000 passengers and
850 million ton-kms of cargo every year, of which
about 80% is container traffic from Dammam to
Riyadh and back. SRO transported about 108,000
TEUs in 2002.

SRO also owns and manages Riyadh Dry Port.
