SAUDI LANDBRIDGE PROJECT

Connects Jeddah ( Red Sea ) to Dammam (Gulf):
Major cities (Jeddah, Riyadh , Dammam, Jubail) and ports in the Kingdom will be linked via
the new railway line;
Jeddah : Major transshipment hub on the Red Sea ;
Dammam : Allows further shipment to Iran , Iraq , Kuwait , Qatar , and Bahrain ;
Riyadh : Largest city and consumption centre in the Arabian peninsula
(population over 5 million)
Jeddah/Makkah region together with Riyadh and Dammam account for around two-third
of Saudi Arabia 's population.
Jubail : Saudi Arabia 's main industrial city;
Landbridge will offer significant time savings compared to shipping by sea around the
Arabian peninsula (5 to 7 days) - so important for high value goods.
Reduced transit times will allow shipping companies to realize cost & service gains.

Over 1,000 km of new railway:
950 km of new line between Riyadh and Jeddah;
115 km of new line between Dammam and Jubail;
Existing Dammam - Riyadh (about 450 km) line will be upgraded;
Line will be single track with long sidings. However, embankment, bridges & tunnels
will be designed for double track to cater for additional traffic growth in future.

Freight and high speed passenger service:
Landbridge will be primarily a freight line (Container & General Freight).
Domestic container traffic makes up the bulk of SL traffic;
Passenger concession will be separate from freight concession.

Land, Regulatory and Other matters:
Land for new railway will be acquired by Government and will be made available to concessionaire;
Concession Agreement will be principal regulatory instrument;
Concession company will be incorporated under Saudi law;
SRO operational assets and staff will be transferred to concessionaire on a selective basis.

MAKKAH MADINAH RAIL LINK PROJECT

Passenger service to accommodate annual pilgrimage:
Railway will be primarily geared towards passenger service;
High speed mass transit system;
Approximately 2.5 million pilgrims during the Hajj period and 7.5 million Umrah visitors
during the year;
Approximately 2 million Umrah visitors during the Ramadan season alone;
Heavy commuter traffic between Makkah & Jeddah.

Concessionaire responsible for design, financing, construction and operation:
Opportunity for Hi-tech transport solution providers to introduce their technology;
Concessionaire will have freedom to adopt suitable design and construction techniques.
